SIUT runs a bi-annual Student Volunteer Program for students in grades 9th, 10th and their final year of O’ Levels. The goal of SIUT's volunteer program is to incorporate a sense of social responsibility and education on introductory volunteer training to Pakistani youth. The program involves series of tours, workshops and lectures delivered by medical professionals. Other activities include interactive sessions such as watching films on current health and bioethics issues such as Organ Trade and Ethics and Culture in Medicine. Each activity is followed by lively discussions where students voice their opinions and got a chance to reflect on the themes presented to them.
SIUT has also started an adult volunteer program. On the 14th and 15th of May 2010 the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) conducted its second adult volunteer program in which 90 women attended a two day workshop. They were introduced to SIUT's philosophy and given an extended tour of the facilities.
This program has been set up to encourage the spirit of volunteerism and to bring together groups of individuals who want to serve humanity. By involving people in a living example of community service and providing basic training we hope to create a force of people that can help in hospitals across the city and in civil society at large.
The women attending the workshop received instruction in the fundamentals of first aid and were guided by the SIUT nursing staff on how to prepare hospital beds, lift and shift patients and give bed baths. They further attended informative lectures on the prevention of hepatitis, caution against food and water borne diseases, causes and symptoms of heart trouble and the importance of nutrition. Most importantly these women got the opportunity to meet with each other and organize among themselves to continue volunteer work in their respective neighbourhoods.
These women were also counseled on the volunteer code of conduct to maintain compassion in their work and aid patient dignity. There was an active Q&A session where participants were able to ask questions related to the lectures and also voice concerns related to their environment.
When asked of their experience at SIUT, the participants agreed that they had learnt a lot in two days and were looking forward to using their newly acquired information in their practical life as volunteers.
