Services

No patient is turned away from our hospital or asked to pay for our services. SIUT does it free - with dignity.

Out-PatientDialysis

SIUT is the largest free dialysis centre in South Asia.

SIUT has pioneered free dialysis treatment on a large-scale within Pakistan. Between June 2008 and June 2009, we carried out over 180,000 dialysis sessions for our patients. There are two primary types of dialysis, Hemodialysis and Peritoneal dialysis, both of which are regularly carried out at SIUT.

About 100 temporary dialysis catheters are placed weekly at SIUT. Two, full-time operation theaters are involved in constructing up to 9 fistulas each day. With the help of qualified vascular surgeons and interventional cardiologists, difficult cardiovascular accesses and various angioplasties are also carried out at SIUT.

SIUT conducts 650 sessions of dialysis daily. On an average each session would cost a patient around 3000 Rs in a commercial institution, at SIUT, like all services here, it is prodivded absolutely free of charge to the patient. The cost to hospital has also been minimzed by the economies of volume and technology and we spend around 1000 rupees per session. Dialysis is an expensive course of treatment for most people in our society.

Hemodialysis

The Hemodialysis department at SIUT comprises of a large out-patient-unit with seventy stations. These include a separate and isolated section for patients infected with Hepatitis B. Our dialysis unit runs three shifts every day.

About 900 patients receive maintenance dialysis in our unit. A full-time Nephrologist supervises a large team of dialysis technicians and nurses. A team of social-workers and dieticians provide ancillary support in managing our everyday logistics.

Peritoneal Dialysis

Chronic intermittent peritoneal dialysis is the preferred treatment for elderly end-stage kidney disease patients with cardiovascular disease at SIUT. This exclusive treatment modality provides 3 to 4 days of intense dialysis to each patient, 3-4 times a month. The total number of patients coming regularly for treatment is between 200 and 250 per month[?]. We also provide intermittent hemodialysis, which is provided to these patients whenever required.
