Introduction

The Nutrition and Dietetic Department at SIUT started its services in 1993 and presently the team consists of 5 qualified dietitians and 1 trainee dietitian, all are members of the Pakistan Nutrition and Dietetic Society (PNDS).

Healthy kidneys are responsible for removing waste products from the blood and maintenance of fluid and electrolyte balance. Nutrition plays an important role in kidney diseases. The Nutrition and Dietetic department provides nutritional guidance to in and out patients and is involved in research and education programs. Each year, over 100,000 patients received some form of nutrition consultation at SIUT.

Services

Clinical Dietitians assess the nutritional status of patients, formulate and implement their nutritional needs. Our team members daliy take ward rounds in various areas of the hospital such as the ICU, Nephrology, Urology, Pediatrics, Hepatogastroenterology Department, and Oncology unit. Beside counseling patients, they also make the enteral and parenteral feeding plans and provide nutritional supplement.

At present, dietetic department is providing high calorie, high protein snacks to oncology ward patients. The most important target the dietetic team has achieved is the establishment of a kitchen for admitted transplanted patients to minimize the risk of infection by providing freshly prepared hygienic food.

Dietitians are available in almost all the Out Patient Departments (OPD) including the Filter OPD, Stone OPD, Pediatric Nephrology and Urology OPD, Pre and Post Transplant OPD, CRF OPD, Diabetic OPD, Donor OPD, GI OPD, and Oncology OPD. In every OPD, referred patient’s individual nutritional requirement is calculated and detailed dietary counseling done according to their disease. In addition, written instructions are also provided.

Research and Education

Research is done on various populations covering Chronic Renal Failure, Dialysis, Post Transplant and Urolithiasis. The dietetic team is always keen to participate in public awareness programs, such as Diabetes day and Kidney Day.

In addition department runsinternship and training program for students and also deliver lectures on nutrition to Nursing and BS Technologist students.
