Other ServicesNuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine is a branch or specialty of medicine and medical imaging that uses radioactive isotopes (radionuclides) and relies on the process of radioactive decay in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Nuclear medicine tests differ from most other imaging modalities in that diagnostic tests primarily show the physiological function of the system being investigated as opposed to traditional anatomical imaging such as CT or MRI scans.

At SIUT, the department of nuclear medicine is equipped with two dual head Gamma Cameras, thyroid uptake system and Hot Lab equipment. The gamma camera can be used for all requested techniques (SPECT, Dynamic, etc.). About 1800 to 2000 patients annually visit our department for various diagnostic procedures. These include bone scans (3-phase, planner, whole-body, SPECT), thyroid studies, renal studies, parathyroid imaging, hepatobiliary scan, labeled RBC's for gastrointestinal bleeding, Meckele’s scan, quantitative investigations include: thyroid uptake, GFR and gall bladder ejection fraction.
