In-PatientPediatric Urology

Introduction

SIUT's Pediatric Urology Department was set up in 2002 comprising healthcare personnel dedicated to child-urology. It has the distinction of being the first and the only specialized department to offer complete range of treatment for urological diseases.

Facilities

Minimally invasive surgical management is routinely carried out in large numbers at the Pediatric Department of SIUT. These treatments include endoscopic treatment of stone disease using laser, Pneumatic Lithoclast and also Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL).

Kidney transplantation facilities for children are also available at SIUT and have been performed successfully even in children as young as two years. Thus far over 350 pediatric renal transplants have been performed.

Urological Disorders in Children, such as urinary tract stone diseases are being actively treated in our facilities. In addition to this, Perinatal Urology care and services are available to detect and look after cases with prenatal developmental defects of the urinary tract. Extensive reconstructive surgeries are performed for voiding dysfunctions and developmental defects of the urinary tract. All of these diseases if not managed timely, complicate into urinary tract obstruction, repeated episodes of infections and finally complete damage to the kidneys; and may even lead to renal failure requiring dialysis and renal transplantation.

Children are also at risk of developing cancers of the urinary tract; fortunately number of them can be completely cured if treated effectively and timely. Children afflicted with urinary tract cancers are provided treatments such as chemotherapy, radical surgeries and radiotherapy.

Multidisciplinary Integrated management of critically ill children is provided under one roof. This involves clinical teamwork between pediatric specialists such as urologists, nephrologists, anesthesiologists, radiologists and intensivists.

Children-specific facilities such as TV (cartoon films), live musicians, music class, toys, play area, drawing/colouring/painting and snacks are provided and are managed by the compassionate and caring workers of the Social Welfare Department of SIUT. These help ease the pain of the children to some extent and keep them involved while they wait to see their doctors or receive treatment.
