Masters in Bioethics, (MBE)

FAQs

Why a Masters in Bioethics?

Pakistan has little presence in the contemporary international bioethics community and the MBE is a step to help address this issue. This program is intended for individuals who are interested in expanding their knowledge and expertise in bioethics and assuming academic leadership roles in the discipline. The graduates of MBE will be well placed to establish bioethics educational programs and conduct relevant research in bioethics in their institutions.

It is envisaged that alumni of this program will strengthen the existing national network of the alumni of CBEC’s Postgraduate Diploma in Biomedical Ethics and will also contribute to the international discourse in bioethics with useful perspectives from a developing country.

Who may apply?

The MBE is suitable for mid-career professionals who already possess qualifications and experience in primary fields such as healthcare services, biomedical research, social sciences, or philosophy, and who wish to incorporate bioethics education and research in their institutions. A minimum of five years of work experience in the primary field following the basic qualification is necessary. Preference will be given to applicants with full time affiliation in an organization/institution involved in education and research, and those who have been engaged in sustained ethics related activities in the past.

Applicants must have good writing skills and basic competency in computers including MS Office, web-based searches, and email.

Will the MBE affect my work schedule?

The MBE is especially structured for full time professionals and includes only brief periods of interruption in their work schedule. The program is spread over two years and requires students being present for 7 to 14 days in CBEC in Karachi for each intensive teaching module. The remaining instruction in relevant aspects of the discipline is provided via faculty monitored, distance learning assignments using the internet. Writing of the thesis and associated research during the last six months of the two years can be undertaken in the student’s parent institution.

What are the requirements for successfully completing the MBE?

To graduate, students are expected to comply with CBEC’s established academic policies and rules. These include punctuality, full attendance in all teaching modules, satisfactory completion of course work and assignments including those related to distance learning components, and active class participation. Submission of the thesis per given deadline is also mandatory for graduation.

Note: CBEC maintains zero tolerance to plagiarism evidence of which is ground for expulsion from the program.

What will it cost me to do the MBE?

CBEC-SIUT will waive tuition fee of all students selected into the MBE program and all reading material is provided free of cost. Reading packets for all modules will also be provided free of cost to all the students. Lunch, tea, and snacks are provided free during the teaching modules held in Karachi.
