FAQs About the Diploma Program

Will The Program Affect My Work Schedule? |
The PGD is structured to enable full time professionals to undertake the course with only brief periods of interruption in work. The course is spread over one year and is a blend of 4 "contact sessions" held in CBEC, and distance learning assignments using the internet. Complete emailed assignments and brief research projects.
Each of the 4 contact sessions is one week long, and involves interactive sessions with the teaching faculty. These take place in February, May, August and December. The distance learning component of the syllabus includes assignments which must be completed and returned via the internet.

Why Postgraduate Diploma in Biomedical Ethics? |
Those involved in health care delivery systems and biomedical research are being increasingly faced with complex ethical issues raised by advances in medical science and biomedical technology. But Pakistan lacks professionals possessing basic knowledge of bioethics and the training to analyze and resolve ethical dilemmas.
The PGD course is fashioned to address this national deficiency. It aims to educate and train mid-career level health care related professionals who have an interest in bioethics, and the potential to initiate and propagate ethics related activities in their institutions. [move to top]

Who Should Apply? |
1) Graduate or postgraduate degree holders qualified in the field of medicine, dentistry, nursing, social and biological sciences and others connected to health care and delivery systems.
2) Minimum five years of work experience after obtaining the basic qualification
3) Full time affiliation with health care organizations/institutions involved in education. However preference may be given to those with full time affiliations
4) Applicants are expected to have basic competency in computers including MS Office, web-based searches, email etc. [move to top]

What Will I Achieve? |
Graduates of the PGD Program will be able to:
Design, organize and implement bioethics educational programs and curricula relevant to
their institutions' need.
- Provide leadership for initiating research ethics committees and hospital ethics consultation groups in their institutions
- Establish institutional learning groups in bioethics for faculty and staff
PGD graduates will acquire 23 credit hours from Karachi University. These will accrue towards an MA degree in Bioethics which CBEC is planning for the future.

What It Will Cost to Me? |
CBEC-SIUT will not charge any fee from the students who are selected for the PGD Program. However, the students will be responsible for the One time enrolment and examination fees charged by the Karachi University.

- Greek moral thought and its influence on contemporary bioethics
- Religious, moral and ethical traditions History of Muslim moral thought in medicine
- Resolution of ethical dilemmas faced in clinical practice including beginning and end of life decisions, informed consent, and confidentiality issues
- Fundamentals of Hospital Ethics Consultation Services
- International Codes of Research Ethics
- Contemporary ethical issues in human subject research

Venue & Facilities |
The four contact sessions of approximately one week each of are conducted at CBEC located on the 5th floor of SIUT's Dewan Farooq Medical Complex in Karachi. Adequate work space, computers, internet access, library, photocopying facilities, and a facilitative learning environment is provided.
If needed, CBEC-SIUT will help out of town students to make arrangements for suitable accommodation for the duration of the contact sessions.
