Dr.
Farhat Moazam is the founding Chairperson of CBEC,
and has had a long academic career. She was the founding
Chairperson of the Department of Surgery and the first
Associate Dean for Post Graduate Medical Education,
FHS, in Aga Khan University, Karachi. Currently she
is also a Fellow of the Institute of Practical Ethics
and Visiting Professor at the Center for Humanism
in Medicine, at the University of Virginia, USA.
Dr.
Moazam has been an invited speaker at many national
and international conferences on topics that have
included Islamic Perspectives on Abortion; Foundational
Ethical Concepts in Islam: The Qur’an, Imam
al-Ghazali, and Muslim Physicians; Local Moral Worlds:
Reflections on Renal Transplantation in Pakistan,
and From Individualistic Ethics to Relational Morality.
She
has published extensively in her areas of interest.
Her doctoral dissertation, Bioethics and Organ Transplantation
in a Muslim Society: A Study in Culture, Ethnography
and Religion, was published by the Indiana University
Press, USA in September, 2006.

Dr.
Anwar Naqvi is a well known name in the field of urology
and transplantation nationally and internationally.
He is Vice President of the Pakistan Association of
Urological Surgeons (PAUS), and a Council Member representing
Pakistan in the Middle East Society for Organ Transplantation
(MESOT) and at the Asian Society of Transplantation
(AST).
He
was Managing Secretary of the Journal of the Pakistan
Medical Association (JPMA), the oldest and most respected
internationally indexed medical journal from Pakistan,
and has contributed over 50 publications in internationally
indexed journals. He has written two chapters, “Resistance
to Cadaver Organ Donation: Experience in a Developing
Country” and “Fallouts of Commercialism
in Organ Donation as seen in Pakistan,” both
published in Organ Replacement Therapy:
Ethics, Justice, Commerce (Springer Verlag: Germany).

Dr.
Aamir Jafarey joined CBEC in October 2004 after training
in bioethics as a Fogarty Fellow in the Department
of Population and International Health, Harvard School
of Public Health. He is also Lecturer and Consultant
General Surgeon at Aga Khan University, Karachi.
Dr.
Jafarey has been involved in bioethics related activities
in Pakistan since 1997. He has been the recipient
of several grants for bioethics related projects.
He has conducted several research projects and has
published in national and international journals.
He has been invited to present papers and conduct
workshops at vatious institutons nationally and across
the region. Dr Jafarey serves as the Coordinator of
the Ethical Review Committee of SIUT.

Dr. Rubina Naqvi is a Nephrologist on the faculty
of Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation
(SIUT), Karachi. She is an alumnus of the Postgraduate
Diploma Program of CBEC, Class of 2006 and has been
a part of the CBEC associate faculty since 2008. She
teaches biomedical ethics to medical technology students
at the ZA School of Medical Technology, SIUT.
Dr.
Rubina is a member of the Asian Bioethics Association
and the Karachi Bioethics Group. She also serves on
the Ethics Review Committee of SIUT. She has attended
and
presented papers at national
as well as international conferences of bioethics.

Bushra Shirazi,

Dr. Bushra Shirazi is a general surgeon on the faculty
of Ziauddin University (ZU), Karachi with an interest
in clinical ethics. She has a Postgraduate Diploma
in Biomedical Ethics from CBEC and was appointed to
its faculty in 2008. Dr. Shirazi is currently enrolled
in the MA Bioethics program (Class of 2011) of the
Sindh Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), Karachi.
Dr. Shirazi is a member of the ZU committee that developed
the bioethics curriculum for its medical students,
and is responsible for taking ethics education sessions
for students and faculty. She is also a member of
the Ethics Review Committee of ZU. Dr. Shirazi is
actively involved in CBEC educational programs including
national workshops and seminars, and has presented
several papers in national and international bioethics
related conferences. She is currently serving as the
Vice President (West Asia) of the Asian Bioethics
Association. She also holds memberships of the Karachi
Bioethics Group and the Ethical Review Committee of
Ziauddin University.

Bushra Shirazi |

Ms. Anika Khan is a remedial teacher working at READyslexics,
Karachi. She has worked with children and adolescents
with dyslexia since 1998. She also works as a trainer
in the READ diploma course for remedial teachers and
has extensive experience in running workshops for
teachers and parents on dyslexia, ADHD, and the teaching
of academic skills like creative writing and phonics.
She has a Bachelor in Arts from Kinnaird College,
Lahore and is currently enrolled in the MA Bioethics
program (Class of 2011) of the Sindh Institute of
Medical Sciences (SIMS), Karachi.
Ms. Khan is also involved in running workshops and
training programs for schools in disadvantaged areas.
She has conducted two workshops for schools on the
teaching of ethics and is currently doing a pilot
project on teaching ethics in a government school.
She hopes to extend her work on ethics by conducting
more workshops for teachers based on her present experience.
