Postgraduate Diploma in Biomedical Ethics, (PGD)

FAQs

Why a Postgraduate Diploma in Biomedical Ethics?

Professionals involved in health care delivery systems and biomedical research are increasingly faced with complex ethical issues related to advances in science and biomedical technology, yet many lack the knowledge and skills to analyze and resolve them. The PGD program is fashioned to help address this deficiency. It aims to educate mid-career healthcare related professionals in the basics of biomedical ethics, to provide them tools for conducting ethical clinical practice and research, and to help them propagate ethics related activities in their institutions.

How much of my time will the program take up?

The PGD is specifically structured for working professionals and requires only brief periods of time away from work. The program, spread over one year, involves three teaching modules and one examination module that take place in Karachi, on campus in CBEC. The first (Foundation Module) extends over 14 days, and the second and third modules average about one week to 10 days each. The fourth module is usually of 4 to 5 days duration. These modules are supplemented with distance learning assignments using the internet in the intervening months.

What are the requirements for successfully completing the PGD?

In order to graduate, students must comply with all CBEC policies. These include punctuality, 100% attendance, and satisfactory evaluation in all modules, and completing all distance assignments in time. Students must also pass the written examination and successfully defend their “bioethics project” in the examination module.

CBEC maintains zero tolerance to plagiarism, an offence which can result in immediate expulsion from the program.

Who may apply?

The PGD is open to those holding degrees in the field of medicine, dentistry, nursing, biological sciences, and professionals connected to healthcare research and delivery systems. It is preferred that applicants have a minimum of five years experience following their basic qualification. Although preference will be given to those with full time affiliation with a healthcare organization/institution involved in education and/or research, self-employed individuals, or those with part time affiliations, may also apply.

Basic competency in computers including MS Office, web-based searches, email etc. is mandatory.

What will the PGD cost me?
