- 11th Asian Bioethics Association
Conference, Singapore
August 01 - 03, 2010, Singapore
Dr. Aamir Jafarey will present papers
entitled “Comparison of CBEC Bioethics curriculum
with UNESCO Core Curriculum,” and “Karachi
Bioethics Group's Ethical Guidelines for Physician-Pharmaceutical
Industry Interactions,” at the 11th Asian Bioethics
Association conference to be held on August 01 –
03, 2010 in Singapore.

ELPAT Congress, Rotterdam,
April 17-20, 2010, Rotterdam, The Netherlands
Dr. Moazam delivered
an invited lecture at the Second ELPAT Congress, held
in April 17 – 20, 2010 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
Her talk was entitled, “Organ Donation and Transplantation
through the lens of Muslim Scholars.”

– European Union Joint Conference on Organ Donation
and Transplantation
March 23-25, 2010, Madrid, Spain
A joint European
Union and World Health Organization global consultation
meeting was held on March 23 – 25, 2010 in Madrid,
Spain. The theme was “European Conference and Global
Consultation on Organ Donation and Transplantation: Striving
to achieve Self-Sufficiency.” Dr. Moazam participated
as member of the subcommittee that developed the section
of the conference report on the “Ethics of the pursuit
of self-sufficiency.”

2009 |
- Wellcome Trust Workshop
November
29 - December 4, 2009, India
Wellcome Trust School of Bioethics
took place in Mumbai. This year’s theme was Gender,
Sex and Ethics. Dr. Moazam was an invited speaker while
Dr. Aamir Jafarey, Dr. Yasmin Wajahat, Dr. Nausheen Saeed
and Dr. Moin Siddiqui attended the school and workshop
on grantsmanship as participants.

- 10th Asian Bioethics Conference
April
26 - 29, 2009, Tehran, Iran
Dr. Aamir Jafarey
led a group of alumni and CBEC associate faculty to the
10th Asian Bioethics Conference in Tehran, Iran. Dr. Aamir
Jafarey presented a paper entitled “Bioethics Education
Initiatives in Pakistan: early impact of an innovative
program”. CBEC’s associate faculty, Dr. Bushra
Shirazi, presented a survey she had conducted on surgeons,
exploring their knowledge about ethics in general and
the Code of Ethics published by the Pakistan Medical and
Dental Council. Dr. Rubina Naqvi presented the content
and methodology of an ethics course she had developed
for biotechnology students. CBEC’s alumni, Dr. Yasmin
Wajahat, Dr. Tashmeem Razzaqi and Dr. Ashraf Hussain also
presented papers on bioethics-related topics.

- Global Ministerial Forum on Research
for Health
November 18, 2008, Mali, Africa
Dr. Farhat Moazam was invited to
give a talk at the Global Ministerial Forum entitled "Without
Ethics, Research and Health make a Two-legged Stool."

- 9th Asian Bioethics Conference
November 3 - 8, 2008, Yogyakarta,
Indonesia
Dr. Aamir Jafarey
and Dr. Bushra Shirazi attended the 9th Asian Bioethics
Conference and presented papers. Dr. Jafarey participated
in a panel on Regulating Organ Transplantation and presented
a paper entitled "An ethnographic study of kidney vendors
of Pakistan". He also presented proposed guidelines
of research ethics in disaster situations. Dr. Shirazi presented
the findings of her study on "Attitudes and Perceptions
Regarding Plagiarism". This study had recently been
conducted in Karachi.

Bioethics, Croatia
September 3-8, 2008, Rijeka, Croatia
Dr. Moazam was invited
to deliver a keynote address at the 9th World Congress of
Bioethics, in Croatia, entitled "Live Kidney Transplantation
in Pakistan: Kinships, Language and Metaphors."

April 16-18, 2008, Tehran, Iran
Drs. Farhat Moazam, Aamir Jafarey and Rana
Muzaffar attended this important regional conference.
Dr. Moazam was invited to give a keynote lecture and Dr.
Jafarey presented the CBEC educational programs at the meeting.

Continuous Professional Development Activity: Sessions
on Contemporary Ethical Issues: A talk on "Kidney Transplantation
in Pakistan: Move from respecting human dignity to commercializing
human rights" at PMA House

This was the third
talk by CBEC Faculty at the PMA House in this series of
lectures meant for junior physicians and house officers.

- Dow University Annual Symposium
February 26, 2007,
Karachi
Dr. Farhat Moazam
participated in a panel discussion on "Kidney Transplant
as Organ Trade" at the symposium of DUHS, held at the
university campus in Karachi. Also on the panel were Drs.
Adib Rizvi and Anwar Naqvi, among others.

- Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Society of Pakistan,
PMA House
June 21, 2007,
Karachi
Dr. Farhat Moazam gave an invited talk
on "Doctor Sahib Yeh Larka Hai Ya Larki?" (Doctor
Sahib, is it a boy or a girl?). She addressed the medical,
legal and social issues connected to intersex and gender
identity disorders in Pakistan.

This international conference
was organised by the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences
in collaboration with ISESCO and the EMRO-WHO. Dr. Farhat
Moazam delivered an invited talk on "Genetic Technologies
and Social Justice: Confluence of Religious and Secular
Concerns."

This conference was a joint
event by the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard
and the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies
at the University of Michigan, conducted by the Harvard
Center for Middle Eastern Studies. Dr. Farhat Moazam was
invited to give the keynote address and spoke on "Universality
of Science and Particularities of Local Worlds."

Dr. Aamir Jafarey was invited to give a
talk at the Aga Khan University Postgraduate Medical Education
Conference on June 2, 2006. The topic of his presentation
was "Commercial Influences Affecting Professionalism:
The Physician's Perspective."

College of Family Medicine, Pakistan
July 9, 2006, Karachi
The College of Family Medicine, Pakistan,
runs an ongoing International Course for MRCGP (Membership
of the Royal College of General Practitioners, UK) for the
benefit of trainees in family medicine as well as general
practitioners of the city. Drs. Aamir Jafarey and Farhat
Moazam were invited to conduct a session in Karachi on bioethics
in which they covered "Respect for Persons," and
ethical dilemmas related to "Privacy and Confidentiality"
in medical practice.

- UNESCO Asia-Pacific Conference
on Bioethics Education
July 26-28, 2006,
Seoul, Republic of Korea
This conference was organized
by Korean National Commission for UNESCO and the Korean
Ministry of Health and Welfare. There were 24 participants
from the Asia-Pacific region and Dr. Aamir Jafarey was representing
CBEC. His plenary talk was entitled "Educating Health Care
Professionals in Bioethics: A Strategy for Pakistan."

Activity: Sessions on Contemporary Ethical Issues on Clinical
Practices, PMA House

CBEC
was asked by Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) to organize
regular educational sessions for young medical professionals
on contemporary ethical issues in clinical practice. The
first session was held at the PMA house in which Dr. Farhat
Moazam spoke on "Contemporary Ethical Issues in Clinical
Practices."

Dr. Aamir Jafarey
gave a keynote address at the Biannual Meeting of the MRSP
at Ayub Medical College, Abbottabad. The title of his talk
was "Research Ethics: Historical Context and Perspectives
from Pakistan."

In the session devoted
to Ethics, Dr. Anwar Naqvi gave a guest lecture on "Organ
Vendors: Social, Psychological and Economics Realities."
Dr. Farhat Moazam moderated and summarized the session on
Ethics.

- "Medical Ethics: Have we
forgotten it?" 7th Annual CMC Symposium at Chandka Medical
College
December 14-16, 2006,
Larkana
This was the first
symposium on Medical Ethics ever held at CMC and was a great
success with the audience asking for more.

An international conference on "Common
Values between the West and Islam" was held from June 15
to 17, 2005. Dr. Aamir Jafarey presented a paper on
"Respect for Human Dignity: A Physician's Reflections on
the Process of Informed Consent."

Certificate Course
November 2005,
Karachi
This eight week,
two cycle course was funded by the Wellcome Trust, UK. It
began its first cycle in November 2005. Dr. Aamir Jafarey,
who was a co-PI of the grant, was also one of the faculty
members teaching this course.
