Urology
Urological service at SlUT encompasses
wide spectrum of emergency and routine cases. It can
conveniently be divided into Transplantation, Uro-oncology,
Urolithiasis (with or without renal failure), acute
and chronic infectious diseases and Andrology. The Institute
caters to both the pediatric and adult population.
The ER of SlUT is basically divided into ERI and ERII.
In ERI the initial TRIAGE is being done and the patients
are segregated as per merit so that care is concentrated
on a patient who is most in need. The resident in ERI
starts the process of investigations and imaging. After
consultation with a senior doctor the patient is shifted
to ERII or to ICU / CCU. Every day the ER of SlUT deals
with approximately 200 patients with symptoms related
to urinary system compounded in many cases with diseases
like Hypertension and Diabetes. The ER facility of SlUT
is in service with back up of pathological Lab and Radiology
24 hours a day and 7 days a week.
The Outpatient
of SlUT is spread in many clinics held simultaneously
in different locations; some in old OPD in Civil Hospital
and some in the new building of SlUT. For example on
every Monday stone clinic is held, Tuesday Oncology
clinic and Diabetic clinic, Wednesday pediatric clinic
for general urology and pre transplant clinic, Thursday
Prostate clinic and stricture clinic, Friday Pediatric
stone clinic and on Saturday Filter clinic which deals
with adult urology. Post transplant clinics are held
every day separately in the new premises of SlUT.
The In-patient
service of SlUT comprises of 350 beds which are allocated
to transplant, pediatric and adult urological patients.
These patients are kept in pre operative and post operative
wards.
The operation theatres
are 16 in numbers which on a particular are busy simultaneously.
They do adult and pediatric elective cases as well as
day case procedures. In addition to this there are three
renal transplant operations done in a week in separate
transplant theatres. The transplant patients and donors
are kept in specially equipped ICU.
The day services
of the Institute also comprises of A V fistula operations
for hemodialysis patients (about 8 patients per day),
Lithotripsy and Urodynamics. There are 4 state-of¬-the-art
lithotriptors which manages 16 patients per day of stone
disease.
Modern urology is technology intensive. Interventional
Radiology plays a vital role in Il!any disease aspects.
The facility of Radionuclide scanning, CT, MR and Angiography
together with conventional X ray and Ultrasound helps
not only in diagnosis but also in therapy. Recently
the Oncology service with Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy
units have been established which are used in the management
of cancer patients specially related to transplant and
