Patient Services / Nephrology

Nephrology

Critical care nephrology comprise of – ICU, CCU , Emergency. SIUT serves as a tertiary referral center hence there is round the clock reference to its emergency department. Renal failure secondary to both medical and surgical etiologies present here daily. 200 patients are evaluated and appropriately triaged on a typical day. A total of 15 haemodialysis machines work round the clock to meet the haemodialysis needs of the emergency room. A patient presenting to us advanced uremia can be initiated on haemodialysis within 15 minutes of arrival.

ICU - SIUT has a 32 bedded fully equipped facility, where patients with multi organ dysfunction, dialysis related medical emergencies and other complicated referrals from all over the country are managed. Among the machines in use here are monitors, dialysis machines and function round the clock. This caters to adult as well as pediatric needs.

CCU – 10 beds are further equipped with ventilatory support and invasive monitoring, along with equipment for Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT).

In Patient services
On an average 180patients are admitted every month. A wide spectrum of clinical challenges associated with renal failure and dialysis are managed here. A large number of renal biopsies originate form this pool of patients. 6 haemodialysis machines are exclusively stationed here to provide bedside dialysis.

Renal replacement therapy

The haemodyalsis section comprises of a large out patient unit of 100 stations, which includes a separate and isolated section for Hepatitis b+ve patients. This is run on a 3 shift basis daily where approximately a 1000 patients are provided maintenance dialysis.

Chronic intermittent peritoneal dialysis is the preferred treatment for elderly end stage kidney diseased patients with cardio vascular disease at SIUT. This exclusive treatment modality provides 3 to 4 days of intense dialysis to every patient 3 to 4 times a month. Between 200 to 250 patients receive this on a monthly basis. Intermittent haemodialysis is proved when required to these patients.

Out Patient department - CRF
Specialized out patient clinics have been set up catering to specific nephrologic needs, some of these are Chronic renal failure (CRF), Adult nephrotic.

Pediatric nephrology -
In Patient
Since August 2005 a new pediatric nephrology ward has been established, it has facility for 14 beds with a rapid patient turnover. Wide variety pediatric kidney diseases are managed here. On an average 20 pediatric renal biopsies are performed in a month

OPD
As with the different specific diseases, pediatric cases are also seen separately in separate OPD clinics. On an average 140 cases are seen at each of these clinics weekly
