Imdad
is 22 years old and hails from Hala in Sindh. He is the eldest
of four children. As his father is handicapped, Imdad is the
sole bread winner and must support his two sisters, his brother
and his parents.
In 2006, Imdad began suffering from urine retention and was
unsuccessfully treated at a local hospital, with the result
that his condition deteriorated and he had to be admitted
at a private hospital in Hyderabad. There, he underwent four
dialysis sessions, at a cost of 5000 rupees per session.
Even so, Imdad’s condition did not improve and he finally
turned to SIUT in October 2006, where a CT scan and biopsy
revealed a malignant tumour in his abdomen. The tumour was
immediately operated upon and removed. Imdad is now undergoing
chemotherapy to eliminate all traces of the tumour.
|
But Imdad is just one of over
500 uro-oncology patients that are treated at SIUT, every
year.

cancer.
*
Every week we perform 40 surgeries, each one costing
anywhere between 10,000 to 35,000 rupees.
*
We also carry out 10 sessions of chemotherapy daily, each
session costing anywhere between 10,000 to 50,000 rupees.
Added to that, every day 12 patients undergo radiotherapy
treatment at our state-of-the-art radiotherapy facility, costing
between 25,000 and 50,000 rupees per patient.
* SIUT
is the only medical centre that provides all of these uro-oncology
treatments to our patients absolutely free of cost. In 2006

Anwer
is 14 years old and hails from Mehar in Sindh. He is the eldest
child of four. He has two younger sisters and a younger brother.
His father works as a daily-wage labourer.
At the age of seven, the bright and always cheerful Anwer
began complaining of severe pain. Diagnosed at the Jamshoro
hospital with bilateral kidney stones, he underwent an operation
to remove the stones. The operation cost his father 6,000
rupees.
Yet, despite the operation, Anwer’s health continued
to deteriorate until eventually he ended up at SIUT in April
2006 with kidney failure. At SIUT he was immediately put on
dialyses and this saved his life. He will however, have to
undergo regular dialysis until a suitable donor can be found
for young Anwer. |
But Anwer is just one of the
estimated 8,000 patients across Pakistan awaiting transplantation
and requiring regular dialysis every single year.

Shahzeb
is two and a half and hails from Multan. He is the youngest
of five children. His father is a farmer and the sole breadwinner
of the family.
When Shahzeb was just one he started having difficulty urinating.
He was first taken to a district hospital from where he was
referred to the Children’s Hospital in Lahore. There
he was diagnosed with bilateral kidney and bladder stones,
but an extensive chest infection dissuaded doctors from operating
on little Shehzeb.
As a result his condition continued to deteriorate. Finally
in November, 2006 his distraught father brought him to SIUT.
Here, cleared of his infection, he underwent two operations
to remove his stones and is currently undergoing dialysis
until he receives a kidney transplant.
|
But Shahzeb is just one of over
112,500 children that are treated annually at our Paediatric
Urology, Nephrology and Transplantation wards at SIUT.

Imtiaz is 19 years old and hails
from Garhi Khairo in Sindh. He is the youngest of six children.
His father is the sole bread winner and supports his family
by farming on a small plot of land.
In 2005, Imtiaz began suffering from progressive abdominal
distension leading to shortness of breath and fever. These
symptoms persisted for over two years and became so severe
that he had to be taken out of school. Finally, as a last
resort, he was brought to SIUT in 2007.
Tests revealed that Imtiaz had chronic Hepatitis B and a severely
enlarged spleen. He is currently being treated for Hepatitis
B and is about to undergo a state-of-the-art partial splenic
embolisation procedure to reduce the size of his spleen

But Imtiaz is just one of over
250,000 young Pakistanis suffering from chronic liver diseases.

Karim
Baksh is 60 years old and hails from Kandh Kot
in Jacobabad where he farms on a small plot of land. From
the meagre earnings that he derives, Karim has to support
not only nine children but a total of 20 family members!
Early this year, Karim began complaining of acute pain in
his lower back. He was then taken to several local hospitals
for treatment until he was finally diagnosed with bilateral
kidney stones. Unable to afford any kind of treatment, he
was referred to SIUT where he was promised world class treatment.
Once at SIUT, Karim’s renal functions were normalised
after which he underwent two lithotripsy sessions to remove
stones from his right kidney. Then, due to a greater number
of kidney stones in his left kidney, he was recently operated
upon and is recovering well.
|
But Karim Baksh is just one
of over 19 million Pakistanis suffering from kidney stones.

Sheraz
is 18 years old and hails from Larkana, where his father,
the sole bread winner in the family works in a shop. In addition
to sheraz, his father must support his wife and six other
children. At the age of five, malformation in Sheraz’s
urinary tract led to a chronic infection. Repeated attempts
to treat this condition by local doctors failed, and in 2006
aged 17, Sheraz went to Kidney failure. The doctors advised
his family to prepare for the worst.
Determined to save his son’s life, Sheraz’s father
brought him to SIUT. Such was the severity of his condition
that both his kidneys had to be removed and he was put on
haemodialysis or seven months, and in August this year he
was given a kidney transplant.
|
But Sheraz is just one of the
estimated 6,000 cases requiring a kidney transplant that present
themselves across Pakistan every single year
