Imtiaz is 19 years old and hails
from Garhi Khairo in Sindh. He is the youngest of six children.
His father is the sole bread winner and supports his family
by farming on a small plot of land.
In 2005, Imtiaz began suffering from progressive abdominal
distension leading to shortness of breath and fever. These
symptoms persisted for over two years and became so severe
that he had to be taken out of school. Finally, as a last
resort, he was brought to SIUT in 2007.
Tests revealed that Imtiaz had chronic Hepatitis B and a severely
enlarged spleen. He is currently being treated for Hepatitis
B and is about to undergo a state-of-the-art partial splenic
embolisation procedure to reduce the size of his spleen

But Imtiaz is just one of over
250,000 young Pakistanis suffering from chronic liver diseases.

suffering from liver and related gastro-intestinal diseases,
treated over 10,000 people in our outpatient clinics.

As a part of our treatment we perform 20
endoscopies in a week, at a cost of 2,000 to 10,000 rupees
per session. We also perform eight ERCP procedures every week,
at a cost of 7,000 to 20,000 rupees per procedure.
* Every
week our two Hepato-gastroentology outpatient clinics diagnose
and treat between 400 to 700 patients.
*
SIUT is the only medical centre that provides treatments
for liver and related gastro-intestinal diseases absolutely
free of cost to our patients. Every year we spend over 10
million rupees on providing expensive diagnostic tests and
