Imdad
is 22 years old and hails from Hala in Sindh. He is the eldest
of four children. As his father is handicapped, Imdad is the
sole bread winner and must support his two sisters, his brother
and his parents.
In 2006, Imdad began suffering from urine retention and was
unsuccessfully treated at a local hospital, with the result
that his condition deteriorated and he had to be admitted
at a private hospital in Hyderabad. There, he underwent four
dialysis sessions, at a cost of 5000 rupees per session.
Even so, Imdad’s condition did not improve and he finally
turned to SIUT in October 2006, where a CT scan and biopsy
revealed a malignant tumour in his abdomen. The tumour was
immediately operated upon and removed. Imdad is now undergoing
chemotherapy to eliminate all traces of the tumour.

But Imdad is just one of over

1,500 new uro-oncology patients were admitted to SIUT. In
the same year we also treated over 8,000 out-patients for
cancer.
*
Every week we perform 40 surgeries, each one costing
anywhere between 10,000 to 35,000 rupees.
*
We also carry out 10 sessions of chemotherapy daily, each
session costing anywhere between 10,000 to 50,000 rupees.
Added to that, every day 12 patients undergo radiotherapy
treatment at our state-of-the-art radiotherapy facility, costing
between 25,000 and 50,000 rupees per patient.
* SIUT
is the only medical centre that provides all of these uro-oncology
treatments to our patients absolutely free of cost. In 2006
alone, we spent close to 30 million rupees on providing diagnostic
tests, surgeries, chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments
free to all our uro-oncology patients. |
